In October, we took 15 volunteers from all over the States to Ndola, Zambia. We completed a project at Grace Academy, the only AIDS/HIV orphanage in Zambia. Immediately we were struck by how healthy the kids looked and found them to be full of energy and joy. This can be attributed to the love of their dorm parents and the medicine they receive twice a day. Grace Academy is an orphanage and a school.
We were there to build a playground next to their school. The playground went up quickly which left plenty of time for us to bond and play with the kids. One day we took the children to a game park and just hung out. We also played soccer with the kids, had a few BBQ’s with them and got to worship with them.
We also partnered with Campus Crusade for Christ to train local Sunday School teachers how to teach the Bible to children using the flannelgraph. We had 90 students from 52 churches in Ndola attend the 2 day event. The class was energetic and really excelled! They loved the training and materials. Most of them thanked us for coming to Ndola and wanted us to come back soon. They don’t have material in their Sunday Schools and desperately need training as well. This was a great first step in equipping the country with incredible training and material.
In the end, they proved that they are committed to teaching children in a new and exciting way. This group will now be able to teach over 4,500 kids about the Bible in a new and exciting way! With the flannelgraph training and playground, this project was packed with ministry. We hope to return next year to build another playground and train even more Sunday School Teachers!
