We all know the devastation that Hurricane Katrina brought to the Gulf Coast just 3 years ago. Through many partnerships we have built over 20 playgrounds in this area, but this playground was different. Through the fundraising efforts of Debbie Perez and her family we were able to build a playground at Smith Elementary School in St. Bernard’s Parish this past August. It was the 3rd completed project in this Parish and the 2nd playground the Perez family raised funds for. With over 30 wonderful volunteers from California, Virginia, and Rockford we were able to bring a little more hope to the lives of the children of Smith Elementary. At the dedication we will never forget what a member of the school board said as his eyes started to tear up, “This is what it is all about. This is why we do things …for them.” Immediately after the dedication the children rushed the playground…once again able to play and just be kids. Meanwhile over at Gauthier Elementary School, artists Nicole and Veronica along with other volunteers painted a beautiful 15'x60' mural, which has received rave reviews by some of the elementary students. It combined a New Orleans Bayou with a modern day school and playground. You can tell these two artists knew what they were doing. Their hard work and dedication will also help improve the children’s lives.
