As this current school year began, it was looking doubtful that the students of Nashold Elementary would be able to raise the needed funds to replace their old, unsafe playground. But they never gave up, and their diligence and hard work paid off in a BIG way. In late April they raised almost all of the $35,000 they needed in order to receive their new playground before the school year ended. Once they called to say they were ready, we were excited for the opportunity to help them. Again the faithfulness of our local volunteers, parents and faculty proved true. We had the entire playground unit built the first day. Then we concreted it in place and began the timber perimeter on day two. Tuesday and Wednesday the volunteers who remained, finished installing the timbers, spreading the mulch (with much appreciated help from the Rockford Park District!) and preparing things for the dedication on Thursday morning. 400 students filled the school gym and enthusiastically welcomed and thanked the many people who helped make their dream a reality. Partners included: rock band Cheap Trick, WXRX radio, The Filling Station, The Rockford Park District, the City of Rockford, the Bartholomew family, and Joe & Debbie Mongan – who met on a KIDS trip a few years ago, and donated their wedding gifts to KIDS to help make the Nashold Community Playground a reality. Thanks to one and all!
